If you see water droplets on a non-porous, smooth and waterproof surface, it is usually condensation. When warm, moist air comes into contact with a cold surface, droplets form. Prolonged condensation can cause mould.
When condensation forms, the source of the moist air and the cold surfaces must be considered.
- Is there sufficient (natural) ventilation in the room? Poorly ventilated areas can cause mould and respiratory problems. Improve the air circulation and possibly fit a ventilation grille and/or mechanical fan.
- Is there a clear source of moisture in the room? Consider, for example, cooking appliances, a water evaporator, building moisture from a recently constructed wall, a poorly ventilated bathroom, etc.
- Maybe there are hidden leaks from water pipes or drains in the wall, floor or ceiling?
- Has insulation work been carried out in the house recently? In that case, the coldest wall can cause condensation problems … With insulation, it is best to tackle the entire house.
